Language Courses

School of Languages
Spoken English courses – Preliminary and Advanced courses started in 2005. With the popular acceptance of the courses in general, ‘Career Orientation Course’, basically for the professionals, was introduced in 2010. Sanskrit course was started from November 2012. The classes are conducted now only on the Sundays. The course has been designed to give better understanding of Indian culture and heritage. It is open to students belonging to all ages. Three other languages, e.g. Hindi, French and German will be opened on the availability of space and other required infrastructure.


School of Languages & Computer Education
With the development of electronic communication system, business industries and professional areas, career-building education and almost all fields in the society have taken a global shape. To face these challenges it is obvious that our youths need to equip themselves with modern education.

In view to give our youths an edge over others in their education and to equip them for the global competition, Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House & Cultural Centre started Spoken English and Computer Courses under the aegis of the School of Languages and Computer Education in 2005. Since then it has a record of consistently excellent academic results.

The humble beginning started with 300 students. Dedication of the faculty members, the ambiance and very personalized care saw the number of the students grow gradually. At present with the total roll strength of 3000, this institution continues its journey as a pioneer institution of Foreign Languages and Computer Education in north Kolkata.
With the popular acceptance of the courses, different levels of the Communicative English and Computer Courses including foreign languages like German and French and some other Indian languages like Sanskrit, Hindi and few professional standard courses had been introduced to meet the growing demands of the students as well as the professionals and job seekers.

The Institution takes additional care for the students by arranging Workshop and Value Education classes along with their regular academics to develop their confidence, personality and build up good characters that help them to achieve their goals and make them worthy citizens for tomorrow.
In order to provide flexibility to the students in choosing the right courses, class days and time slots, the School runs from 8 am to 8 pm from Monday to Sunday (except on the holidays).

There are three sessions in an academic year: April/May – July/August, September – December, and January – April.

 

 

COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH

In accordance with the faith that Swamiji had in the youth of India, we have pledged to empower them with the strength of communication. In this increasingly competitive world, English, emerging as an international language today, is of utmost importance. The School of Languages endeavours to provide the students with four levels of Communicative English namely, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Professional to equip them with confidence and competence to face the world.

1. BEGINNER COURSE
Objective: The main objective of this course is to prepare our students to overcome the basic challenges of communication with fluency in English. This course will further empower them to perform better in their academics. This will be a learning experience to reinforce their confidence.


STANDARD
This course is for the beginners to help them brush up the rudiments of English Language. It is designed so as to assist them to overcome their initial inhibition in speaking a foreign language. Students are free to interact with their concerned faculty members and hence develop their fluency in English. Through conversations, story-telling, letter writing, extempore, J.A.M. & H.A.M. sessions, etc. students would acquire a working knowledge of the language. They are encouraged to speak grammatically correct English and enrich their vocabulary. Teachers are there to help them with their pronunciation and diction. Classes are made interesting with audio visual aids, and various other innovative methods.


INTENSIVE
This course aims to give the students an exclusive edge over others in their education. With an intake of a limited number of students, they are encouraged to interact with their concerned faculty on a one-to-one basis, which helps strengthen their speaking powers. The course teaches effective English usage, and further develops the vocabulary repertoire and functional language needed to communicate and survive in a modern working environment. In this course, computer aided curriculum equips the students for the global academic competition.

Duration: 4 months – 80 Class Hours.
Class: 2 hours per day and 3 days a week. [MWF = Mon–Wed–Fri / TTS = Tue–Thu–Sat]
Eligibility: Anyone who has passed Secondary (10 class) Exam can take direct admission, and who has appeared in the Exam and awaiting results can also take admission subject to clearing the Board Exam.
Required Documents: 1. One attested photocopy of admit / mark sheet of Secondary Exam.
2. Two copies of stamp size colour photographs.

 

2. INTERMEDIATE COURSE
Objective: This course has been introduced to ensure better performance in competitive exams as well as Board exams. It will provide a sound base in English. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to speak correct English more efficiently with others, to express their ideas adequately. Along with English, students are guided by our experienced faculty to inculcate values and etiquette so that they can project a finer personality.

It synchronizes preparation for multiple exams. This approach enables a stress free and easy learning environment for students, allowing them adequate time for self-study.

The course curriculum has been designed to allow the Beginner level pass out students to improve themselves to a higher level of communicative English, preparing them for the Advanced Course later on. At the end of the course, after relevant examinations, a certificate is awarded with a greater value.

The course entails special techniques of rectifying grammatical mistakes through worksheets, extempore, conversation, role-play, short speech etc. Audio visuals and special interactive sessions are also included to equip the students with better communicative skills.

Eligibility: Anyone who has completed Beginner Course can take admission in this course.
Required Documents: 1. One photocopy of the certificate/ID card of the Beginner Course

3. ADVANCED COURSE
Objective: The purpose of this course is to provide an intensive knowledge of English as a means of communication. By the end of the course, students are expected to speak smartly and intelligently on matters of national and international importance, social issues, current affairs and a myriad of interesting topics. Their personality development and grooming by a team of dedicated teachers will help to prove themselves as worthy citizens.


In this course, emphasis is given on the functional aspect of the language such as Extempore, Debate, newspaper reading, live reporting, Group Discussion, and Teamwork. During the session students, acquire a basic knowledge of writing an effective C.V. and interview techniques.

Duration: 4 months – 80 Class Hours.
Class: 2 hours per day and 3 days a week. [MWF = Mon–Wed–Fri / TTS = Tue–Thu–Sat]
Eligibility: Anyone who has successfully completed the Intermediate Course can take direct admission. Advanced learners who have a relatively good knowledge of the fundamentals of English and have completed Graduation or any Diploma course or have completed at least three years study in any professional course may apply. They will be selected through a screening process.
Required Documents: 1. One attested photocopy of certificate/mark sheet of last exam/of Intermediate Course.
2. Two copies of stamp size colour photographs.

 

4. PROFESSIONAL CAREER COURSE
Objective: The aim of this course is to put an edge to the professionals’ career. The focus will not only be on communicative English but also on personality development through soft skills and value education along with honing the project based computer skills. It is designed to enhance their proficiency in interactions on an overall basis.


It is targeted for those who are studying in any technical stream like Engineering, Medical, Nursing or any professional course like Management, Law, or in jobs of Medical Representative, Sales or Marketing, Public Relation / Administration, or Programme Coordinator, BPO/Call Centre. It is equally helpful to the new employees or job seekers.


Reporting & taking notes, Presentation skills, Mock Interviews & G.Ds., Personality development and project based computer knowledge are particularly emphasised in this course.

Duration: 4 months – 80 Class Hours.
Class: 2 hours per day and 3 days a week. [MWF = Mon–Wed–Fri / TTS = Tue–Thu–Sat]
Eligibility: Anyone who has successfully completed the Advanced course or is pursuing / engaged in any career stream as mentioned above can take admission directly. Under Graduate professionals and Graduates from any regular stream may also take admission through a screening procedure.
Required Documents: 1. One attested photocopy of certificate/mark sheet of last exam/of Advanced Course.
2. Two copies of stamp size colour photographs.

 

 

KOMMUNIKATIV-DEUTSCH


(COMMUNICATIVE GERMAN)
This course in German language has been introduced to train the learners in the basic usages of German which they can apply to their day-to-day experiences. This course is for the beginners to make them familiar with the basic phonetic and grammatical structure of the language with an emphasis on building an elementary vocabulary to start with. It is designed to help them understand simple German texts and expressions including common greetings, brief conversations, basic questions and short passages and after passing the examination, the successful students can introduce themselves in a conversation and answer questions on themselves, make common requests and formulate questions in everyday situations as well as reply and respond to those. Adoption of a functional and communicative approach is expected to help the students overcome their initial inhibition and acquire a rudimentary working knowledge of the language.
